1963年に日加間の最初の姉妹都市となったBC州ニューウェストミンスター市と大阪府守口市。60周年記念を2023年に控え、大好評開催中の『日加ユースオンライン交流会』第３弾を、2022年10月15日（土）に開催しました。
今回はニューウェストミンスター市からは「ニューウェストミンスター高校」や「ダグラスカレッジ」の生徒が、守口市からは「大阪国際高等学校」の生徒が参加し、両都市の繋がりをさらに飛躍させる機会となりました。
13歳〜22歳の若者総勢35名が参加し、少人数ブレイクアウトルームで４つのトピックに渡って英語・日本語両言語を使った交流を繰り広げました。日本にいるとなかなかカナダの若者と友達になったり実際に話す機会はないのでとてもよい機会だったという感想が聞かれました。
カナダ生まれで３言語を操る歌手のSarah Leeさんにスペシャルゲストとしてご参加いただき、ブレイクアウトルームに入って参加者と直接コミュニケーションをしたり質問に答えていただきました。多言語をコミュニケーションレベルで身につけることと、自分のやりたいことを追い続けるライフモデルになりました。
Sarah さんが作詞した『I AM I』は日本のTVアニメ『ユーレイデコ』のコラボソングとして採用されており、そこにこめたSarahさんの思いについて英語で語っていただきました。参加者からは、多言語を話して自分の夢を追い続けるSarahさんに感銘を受けた、自分も見習ってやりたいことを挑戦したいと思った、という声が上がりました。

交流会イベントアンケート回答者全員が「楽しかった・とても楽しかった」と回答。47%の人が「もっと第二言語を話せるようになりたいと思った」と答えています。
JC-COC姉妹都市交流企画委員会では、単なる国際交流ではなく、これから大人になっていくカナダと日本の若者が今どんな体験を望んでいるのかに沿って、次回もさらに内容を充実させて、パワーアップした交流会を企画する予定です。
第４回のユースオンライン交流会は2023年2月を予定しています。

JCCOC Sister City Commemoration Event “Youth Online Session”– 3rd
To commemorate the sister city relationship between New Westminster (BC) and Moriguchi (Osaka) in 2023, we have conducted the third Youth Online Session on October 15th, 2022.
This is a very popular series for many young participants who seek cultural exchange experiences between Canada and Japan. Participants gathered from all across the two countries;
some of them from schools in New Westminster (New Westminster Secondary School, Douglas College) and Moriguchi (Osaka International High School) contributed to representing the bond between the two cities that will last into the future.
Thirty five participants aged 13-22 met and chatted over four curious topics in smaller breakout rooms in English and Japanese during the event. Some of them joining from Japan found it a great opportunity to interact and make friends with people overseas.
We were joined by a special guest; Sarah Lee, a trilingual Canadian singer. The event participants had a chance to directly communicate with or ask some questions to her in a breakout room. Sarah, who has acquired three different languages and has pursued her dream to be a singer, is an inspiring life model to the young participants.
Sarah shared her story she embedded in her song “I AM I”, a song made in a collaboration with a Japanese TV anime “Yurei Deco”. One of the participants told us she was inspired by Sarah and encouraged to make her own dream come true too.

All respondents answered “I enjoyed the event.” or “I enjoyed the event very much.” in the post-event feedback. 47% of them want to study a second language harder.
JCCOC Sister City Interaction Committee will continue to offer even-upgraded online youth interaction to meet specific needs and requests from youth in Canada and Japan who are eager to gain meaningful experiences.
The fourth Youth Online Session is tentatively scheduled in February 2023. Stay tuned!
