~A perfect day presented by UBC exchange students: "Connecting the sea, culture, and people"~
This time, an event called "Kai-katsu" (Sea Activities), planned primarily by exchange students from Japan currently enrolled at UBC (University of British Columbia), will be held at the Nikkei Centre.
"Umi-katsu," which has primarily contributed to the community through clean-up activities along Vancouver's coast, is taking this a step further by creating an opportunity to connect, discuss, and learn about the cultures of Japan, Indigenous peoples, and the people of Vancouver through the sea and fish. People of all ages, from seniors to young adults, will gather around a table to enjoy the bounty of the sea while engaging in dialogue.
The Chamber of Commerce highly values and supports the activities that have arisen from the students' own initiative and desire to express their gratitude to their host communities through concrete actions and footprints. It hopes that even during their short stay, these students will sincerely engage with the Japanese community and become a bridge connecting their own culture with Vancouver's culture.
This time, we'll have a panel discussion with Takuya Hikita, CEO of TFM Co., Ltd., and a guest who is well-versed in the fish culture of indigenous peoples, as well as a tasting of a special poke bowl made with fresh fish imported from Japan by TFM and salmon caught by indigenous fishermen.
We hope this event will be a time for new encounters, learning, and inspiring your next steps. We sincerely look forward to your participation.
