On February 22nd, a luncheon lecture on the BC provincial budget proposal was held at the Hilton Hotel in Burnaby, British Columbia, featuring BC Premier Gordon Campbell.
Organized by the Burnaby Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Japan-Canada Chamber of Commerce, the event was a great success, attracting over 300 participants including members of both chambers of commerce, members of the discussion group and the business association (Japanese businesses), government officials from various countries, and other business professionals.
The general outline has already been reported through the media, but this time the Prime Minister himself held briefing sessions at chambers of commerce in various cities throughout British Columbia. Receiving a direct explanation is certainly impactful, as it conveys his determination and resolve, making it highly effective.
This year's budget proposal features increased spending on social services, homelessness measures, economic and cultural development in Asia, arts facilities, and healthcare. Particular emphasis is being placed on healthcare, with the budget increasing from $9.36 billion in 2001 to $14.84 billion in 2008, and further to $16.54 billion in 2010. The average income tax rate also decreased from 21.31 TP3T in 2002 to 14.11 TP3T in 2008.
The idea is to increase the carbon tax to cover these costs and simultaneously solve the environmental pollution problem, killing two birds with one stone. However, increasing the carbon tax means that gasoline prices will rise for consumers, and the products of companies subject to the carbon tax will also become more expensive. So, it's hard to say how much benefit there will actually be until it's put into operation.
The Japan-Canada Chamber of Commerce is affiliated with the Burnaby Board of Trade, so as a person of Japanese descent, I was able to participate in the event held in Burnaby, which was a very meaningful event for raising awareness of the Japanese community.
