大阪府青年国際交流機構とのコラボイベントで、日本とカナダの子どもがよく食べるお菓子を実際に送りあい、会場でそれを実食しながら、オンラインで繋がっている日本の参加者と英語と日本語で感想や質問を述べ合う新しい形の「ハイブリッドオンライン交流会」を開催しました。
大阪、バンクーバーそれぞれの会場に約15名ずつの参加者（小学6年生〜大学生）が集まり、実際に海の向こうから届いたお菓子を一つずつ開けながらその味、色、形、量、包装、そしてアタリ・ハズレなどの遊び感覚を楽しみました。「これ、知ってる！」「美味しい！」「こっちにはこういうのないよね」「おもちゃがついてくるんだ！」など実際に体験しながら、日本とカナダそれぞれで育つ同年代の子どもたちの食文化を感じ、どのような日常を送っているのかに思いを馳せました。
バンクーバーの会場では、日本から送られてきたじゃんけんの形をしたグミで実際にじゃんけんぽんをしたり、食べたら舌が真っ青になるガムを食べて舌を見せあったりと、美味しく盛り上がりました。また日本の会場に送ったカナダのお菓子一つひとつを、オンラインで日本語で説明したり、普段学習している日本語を実際に使う良い練習にもなりました。

JCCOC has conducted the Japan–Canada Snack Exchange: Hybrid Online Cultural Exchange on Saturday June 10, 2023 in collaboration with International Youth Exchange Organization Osaka. About 15 participants (Grade 6~university students) gathered in the Vancouver venue, tasted seven different snacks shipped from Japan, and exchanged their opinions about the snacks in Japanese and English in this “hybrid” online event.
Participants in Vancouver enjoyed a new style of rock-paper-scissors with a rock/paper/scissors-shaped gummy. They also liked to show off their blue-tinted tongue after eating a blue gum. The event served as a perfect occasion for them to use the Japanese language that they have been studying in Canada, to communicate with people in the same generation in Japan.
Special thanks to International Youth Exchange Organization Osaka who jointly organized this wonderful event, Vancouver Japanese Language School who let us use their classroom as a venue, and last but not least, all the participants who gathered from different cities of BC, Canada.
